The Band's History
Founded in January 1979, Malvern Hills District Brass Band (MHDBB) celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2019 and is currently led by Musical Director, Chris License.
The original members came from all over the country, bringing experience from bands such as Hanwell, Mirrlees, Desford and Shirley. The newly formed band began its successful contest history with a third prize win at the Pontin’s Festival (Brean Sands) in Easter 1980 and has competed regularly since then (in the Third and Fourth Sections) to win trophies, shields, certificates and banners for performances at Pontin's, The Wychavon Festival of Brass, Leamington Spa, Coleford, The Whit Friday Marches, Burford and Weston-Super-Mare; as well as the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain.
Qualifying for the National Finals five times, MHDBB has been privileged to perform twice at the Royal Albert Hall, London — most recently in 2000, with Chris Lewis as MD.
With an extensive repertoire the band performs throughout the year and has entertained abroad in Holland, Malta, Germany and France. Carolling at Christmas makes the band especially busy and since 1997 its Christmas Charity Concert at Huntingdon Hall in Worcester has been an important annual event, helping to raise thousands of pounds for other local charities.
